Eden
Vineyard, Ebford
Pebblebed is a local wine produced
from organically grown grapes at Eden Vineyard in Ebford near Topsham.
Geoff Bowen first established the vineyard in 2000 as a community
project involving 16 dedicated local families in the management
of the vines over a 0.5-acre area.
Geoff planted a further 3 acres
of vines (Madelaine Angevine, Seyval Blanc and Rondo) at Eden Vineyard
in 2002 that should come into full production in 2005. However,
a small 2004 vintage was produced. Pebblebed
rosé 2004 was an immediate sensation and the quality of the
wine was recognised when it gained a prestigious Gold Medal award
at the English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition. Geoff went
to the House of Lords to receive his certificate from Lord Montagu
of Beaulieu.
In the spring of 2005, Geoff,
with the help of many Club Vino members, planted some 6000 Pinot
Noir vines in Ebford and West Hill, as well as a very small experimental
vineyard of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines have subsequently and consistently won
awards and praise from customers and critics alike.
In 2010, a new venture was launched:
Pebblebed Partnership Vineyards, which gives people the opportunity
to have a direct relationship with a vineyard, helping to plant,
tend and harvest. All participants receive special, personally
labelled bottles of wine.
